Dutchtown junior William Mathis entered the tournament with three tournament
wins and an 18-2 record. Two of those wins were over East Ascension senior
Gabriel Bonin. Unfortunately, the two losses were also to Bonin.
Mathis' win came in the Spartan Invitational (8-7) and a dual meet (11-3 MD).
Bonin's wins came in a dual meet (5:20) and the District 5-5A Championships
(3:36). Both won the Griffin Open, but Bonin was at 182 lbs. While
Mathis' sole losses were the two matches to Bonin, Bonin had lost to four other
opponents, including twice to Covington's Landon Carroll, whom Mathis had
defeated twice. Whatever the reasons were for seeding Bonin ahead of
Mathis and Carroll, they worked. Mathis defeated Carroll 10-2 MD in the
semifinals and Bonin pinned Mathis in the finals in 5:20.
The seeding went a little awry after that. Carroll defeated #7 Tel
Cahow of Baton Rouge in the consolation finals, and #4 Tyler Baumy of Lakeshore
placed fifth via a fall in 16 seconds over unseeded Sharon Guidry of McDonogh
#35.In only his second event of the season Guidry put up a very respectable
record of 4-3.
